UHMW is an ultra-high molecular weight polymer of polyethylene that is one of the most cost effective plastic materials known. UHMW is engineered to possess several high performance properties and is useful for a large range of products.
The most outstanding properties are:
- Extremely low coefficient of friction
- Withstands sand, grit, and corrosion at sub-zero temperatures
- High wear resistance
- Easy to machine
UHMW can be used in a temperature range from –40°F to +180°F.
Typical Properties
Color: White
Temperature Range: –40°F to +180°F
Tensile Strength: 5,000 psi
Impact Strength: 17.4 ft-lbs./in.
Specifications Met: 3-A Certified, ASTM D4020, ASTM D4976, ASTM D6712, Made of FDA Listed Material
Recommended for Outdoor Use: No
Typical Application
The extremely low coefficient of friction of UHMW makes it a very slippery plastic and enhances its wear characteristics. As it is made from FDA grade materials, it is a preferred material in food packaging applications. It is also often used as conveyor guide rails, chute liners, shelf liners, belt scrapers, chain guides and guide rails, suspension wear plates, sprockets, wheels, bearings, and a range of sliding applications.
Applications for machined parts include: food packaging, chain belt guides, sprockets for conveyors, chemical processing—pistons, valves, bearings; Waste Water Treatment—chain drive sprockets
